What our Society is all about...
Baxter County came into existence on March 24, 1873, and it was in 1973, the Centennial year, that a group of citizens came together to form the Baxter County Historical Society. After meeting and planning, the Society was officially chartered in 1974. In 1999, we officially inserted the words “and Genealogical” into our name to more accurately show our purposes.
The Society has operated from the former hospital in Gassville, and from a Heritage Center at 808 S. Baker Street in Mountain, and in 2024, our 50th year, we have moved to the new Baxter County Historical Museum at 300 Bomber Boulevard.
The Baxter County Historical and Genealogical Society is a group of people who come from all over the county, as well as from many parts of the country, who share a common interest in preserving the history of Baxter County, Arkansas and the surrounding region, as well as a passion for history in general.
The work of the society is supported by membership dues, fundraising projects and events, and Individual and Business Sponsors.
BECOME A MEMBER
We invite you to become a member of the Baxter County Historical & Genealogical Society and help support our efforts toward preserving the heritage of Baxter County. You are welcome to join us whether you live in the Baxter County area or somewhere else. A number of our members live in other states, but join because their family members were or are in Baxter County, and they like to research with us.
Whether local or distant, membership has its benefits. Local members can benefit from guest speakers at our meetings, and can volunteer to help with events, projects and in the Archives and Museum.
All members receive the Baxter County History (our quarterly journal) and receive a 10% discount on all books and other items sold by the Society.
Membership dues are:
Annual Membership – $40.00
Individual Sponsorship – $100.00.
Business/Commercial Sponsorship – $150.00
The sponsorships include membership, and three (3) copies of the Quarterly, along with your business or personal advertisement both on our website and in the Quarterly.
